What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which can lead to variations in genes or entire genomes. These changes could over generations lead to the creation of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is natural selection, which explains the process by which those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantageous characteristics. This differential reproduction can eventually lead to the creation and evolution of new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word meaning unraveling or revealing, however the concept has had a variety of meanings since it took form in the fields of science and elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species evolved into new species in a predetermined fashion. The term"transmutation" was coined by the Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

Recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living organisms develop traits that enhance their chances of survival or ability to produce offspring. As time passes, this genetic variability can lead to the emergence of entirely new physical or biological functions in a population. Such a variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it is the main driver of evolutionary change. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolutionary because they aren't passed on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific tests, creationists have seized on the idea that the theory is controversial to argue that it should not be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists have gained a few victories in their fight to remove evolution from high-school textbooks, including the removal of references to the evolutionary origins of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur thought to be the ancestral bird's ancestor.

The evidence comes from a wide range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The vast majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. This support is based on many different reasons. Certain scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries such as the development of new medicines and other treatments, while others use it to improve animal and plants species, mostly to benefit humans. Some scientists are simply curious, while others have an intense belief in God.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken seriously. While some creationists are not Christian but they are a majority. Creationists are usually divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

The most well-known type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the first six days of creation was true and that the universe as well as life on Earth were only created recently.

OECs are less well known however they are as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a myth.

Both types of creationism reject the scientific theories that biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life came to be on Earth. They claim that evolution is inconceivable because it requires miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought shunned miracles because they feared they could lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and special creation. They refer to their belief as "theistic evolution.” It is sometimes known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." In this theory, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. In the end these evolutionary changes will result in new species like the original ones.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event known as the Great Flood. These creationists believe that the first species were created at the same time and that they evolved gradually afterward. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and argue that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.

In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by a variety of professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions are however more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be included in their curriculum.

What is Creationism?



When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their editions. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has achieved its first victory by removing examples of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx in textbooks. The focus is now on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution as well.

STR claims that it has the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays a negative view for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of students in biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR has achieved a number of things through its seminars and lectures. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences that has a creationist viewpoint, which attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor together with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

On August 6-7, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to an audience of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
